Recently Google announced their plans to release their own operating system, Google Chrome OS. Many have speculated what impact this will have on Microsoft’s Windows OS, especially considering Google’s plans to release the operating system for free. That’s right. Free.

Currently, Microsoft Windows is sold on 90% of consumer PCs, which leads some to believe that Google will have little influence at all. Since Windows represents nearly $11 billion of the annual operating income for Microsoft, which is about half its total, Microsoft has a lot to lose while Google has very little.

Google Chrome OS is expected to ship sometime in 2010 and is rumored to be released just for net books initially.
